CELEBRATING PRINCESS BEATRICE TINUOLA AGUNSOYE AT 96: A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A BEAUTIFUL OLD AGE

OLUSEGUN APENA

December 25th has always been a very special day for millions of people all over the world being the day Lord Jesus Christ was born. However, for Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, the Lawmaker representing the good people of Kosofe Federal Constituency, the day, apart from being a special one, is very unique in the sense that it is the day his beloved mother - the matriarch of Agunsoye Royal Family of Ijebu-Ijesha, Princess Beatrice Tinuola Agunsoye - was born.

It is, therefore, no wonder that the Lawmaker attaches so much importance to celebrating the day with hundreds of his political loyalists, friends, colleagues and family members. Thus as the distinguished Lawmaker joins the rest of the world to celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ on December 25th, he is at the same time celebrating the birthday of his beloved mother who happens to be his pillar of support and bedrock of success over the years. And this year's own is not different.

The family house of the Agunsoyes in Ijebu-Ijesha was agog for the double celebrations on Sunday afternoon. But for the matriarch to have attained the age of 96 is an incredible milestone and a phenomenal feat.

But what even makes the life of the nonagenarian Princess more phenomenal and thought-provoking is her amazing nimbleness, agility, mental alertness, poise, strength and stamina. At 96 mama looks anything but 25 years younger. She is a fascinating spectacle to behold. The great Spanish Painter Pablo Picasso put it succinctly, "We don’t grow older, we grow riper." Yes, Mama at 96 is only ripe, not old.

It is a well-known fact that with the setting of old age comes all sort of senilities and immobility. It is a stage in life that many people pray to attain but dread its approach just like Emile M. Cioran did. The French-Roman philosopher once declaimed: "Old age, after all, is merely the punishment for having lived".

In the case of Princess Beatrice Tinuola Agunsoye, there is very little senility and immobility about her. Although slightly wizened and dainty, she neither walk with a stoop nor with a walking stick as many at her age would do. Besides, her labyrinth has not been asphyxiated and her mental alertness is astonishing. And she could also stand for hours.

At 96 Mama is amazingly stronger and healthier than many people who are in their 70s. I testify to her relative stamina and strength. I also testify to her amazing agility and nimbleness.

Recently, at the wedding of her grand-daughter, Princess Oluwaromade, held at five palm event centre lekki, Mama alongside two other women was dancing to a melodious song of the Vanguard band when I inadvertently gave her a slight push while rushing to snap pictures of the bride's father with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Suddenly, one of the women shouted, "ah, you have pushed mama!" I looked back and it was truly the nonagenarian. I immediately prostrated apologetically. But mama just stood still for about 10 seconds without uttering a word and thereafter continued waltzing slowly to the song of the musical band.

After l had taken desired pictures of Prince Rotimi Agunsoye and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, I went back to mama, hugged her and took selfies with her.

While hugging her, I could feel the amazing strength in her that is somehow rare in people of her age and all the negative notions I had been entertaining about old age instantly evaporated.

I sat back at my table for some minutes and ruminated deeply on the phenomenon before me. And the memorable words of the great British Poet, Robert Browning crept into my mind: "Come grow old with me. The best is yet to be". And I said to myself, there may be relative comfort in old age after all. I now more than ever desire to live as long as mama provided it comes with good health and wealth.

Until this moment, like the late former Governor of Oyo state Abiola Ajumobi, I had dreaded old age and strongly felt that the appropriate age to quit the earthly plane is 70.

As Princess Beatrice Tinuola Agunsoye celebrates her 96th birthday, I could but wish her more years in the land of the living in good health and sound mind. She still has what it takes to be a centenarian in four years. And if God will she could go all the way to 120.
