HOW REP ROTIMI AGUNSOYE REDEFINES REPRESENTATION IN KOSOFE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY:THE CHRONICLE OF AN ACCOMPLISHED LEGISLATOR’S ACHIEVEMENTS
The Chairman House Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye is arguably the best Lawmaker Kosofe Federal Constituency has ever had. The foregoing is not an overstatement. In fact, it is a self-evident truth based on the fascinating exploits and performance of the Lawmaker on and off the floor of house of representatives.
As his tenure as a Federal Legislator comes to an end in May, one may not be wrong to assert at this point that the Prince of Ijebu-jesha has diametrically delivered on the electoral promises he made to his constituents before he assumed office in 2015.
The lawmaker had among other things promised “to reinvent representation, make it more efficient, more impacting and more effective. To give people choices in the services they get and empower them to make those choices".
With sheer determination, resilience, diligence, commitment and responsiveness to duties and responsibilities, he is able to effectively redefine representation, makes it attractive and bring governance closer by impacting positively on countless number of youth and women.
As an experienced administrator and astute politician that cut his teeth in Lagos State, he is able to accomplish the landmark achievements through a well-coordinated series of life-changing Wealth Creation and Skill Acquisition Schemes for youth and women, facilitation of constituency projects and constant engagement with the constituents.
Prior to his messianic advent, it is worthy to note that groundbreaking empowerment programmes and projects facilitation were completely strange to the people of Kosofe Federal Constituency. Never in the annals of the federal constituency had the people been congregated periodically in humongous numbers for a date with destiny.
The people of Kosofe Federal constituency were badly configured to believe the primordial notion that the only responsibility of a Legislator is just to make law while such things as projects facilitation, constituents’ welfare package and wealth creation schemes were regarded as exclusive responsibilities of the executive arm of government. But the emergence of Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye in 2015 instantly erased that and opened the eyes of the teeming constituents to the vistas of opportunities and democratic dividends abound at the national assembly.
Immediately after his inauguration, the Promise Keeper as he is fondly called, took it upon himself like Tarzan to change the unpalatable narrative by pulling his people out of the abyss of poverty and widespread unemployment.
Thus, the flurries of lifesaving empowerment programmes; thus the deluge of welfare packages and facilitation of landmark projects dotting the landscape of Kosofe Federal Constituency. And the importance of those facilitated projects and empowerment programmes in the lives of the indigent beneficiaries and communities cannot be overemphasized.
Prince Rotimi Agunsoye has no doubt performed tremendously in providing quality representation to the people of Kosofe Federal Constituency and etched his name in the sands of time and posterity will never forget him. No politician dead or alive in Kosofe Federal Constituency approximates Rep Rotimi Agunsoye's achievements or provided quality representation to Kosofe Federal Constituency like he has done in the last 8 years.
And the above assertion is well supported with the following astonishing projects and scorecard:

EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES
In February 2016, barely a year on the saddle, Hon. Agunsoye organized first of its kind Empowerment & Wealth creation Scheme for 200 graduates in Kosofe Federal Constituency in various categories: Job Placement and skill acquisition, ICT, Cosmetology, solar energy, Agriculture, Fashion Design, Cinematography, Graphics/ printing, catering & hotel management, Business Skill and Interior Designs.
He followed this up with a skill acquisition programme for 50 women in conjunction with National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and on April 22, 2016 he organized another Wealth Creation Programme where block molding machines, sewing machines, Embroidery Machines, Grinding Machines, Motorcycles, Generator sets, Tricycles and other equipment were distributed to Artisans and traders.
Furthermore, in July 4, 2018 Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye organized what was then tagged as the “Mother-of-All” empowerment programme for over 1000 constituents at CMD event centre, Shangisha. At the programme, different entrepreneurial tools such as Tricycles, Motorcycles, popcorn machines, hair dryers, generators, sewing machines, beadmaking accessories, mechanic and vulcanizing tools to beneficiaries of his wealth and skill acquisition, beneficiaries of NDE programmes and some other indigent constituents.
He in addition presented cash gifts and welfare packages to over 200 widows and indigent people. Hon. Agunsoye, speaking at the event, said that he organized the empowerment programme in order to create jobs to eradicate poverty and unemployment in his constituency while declaring that job creation was no longer exclusive responsibility of any government in the world. He asserted that poverty, which is the corollary of large-scale unemployment, could only be wiped off through acquisition of requisite skills and empowering of more entrepreneurs.
Subsequently, on December 13, 2019 and February 11, 2020 he organized ICT Training and Empowerment Programmes for the youth of his Constituency. And on March 20, 2020 Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye again engaged the youth of the constituency in ICT training and empowerment programme and two days later on March 24, 2022 he organised training for 200 youth and women in Trade/ Export Processing & Investment with 50,000 naira as start-up capital.
Hon. Agunsoye on 4th January 2021 empowered 17 youths with tricycles and motorcycles. And on April 24, 2021 as part of activities to mark his 59th birthday, empowered 50 indigent constituents with 50 mini buses, donated 40 wheelchairs to the physically challenged in Kosofe federal constituency and gave 170 widows 10,000 naira each as monthly stipends. These were presented to the beneficiaries by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu who graced the occasion.
Some of the beneficiaries of the mini buses are Dauda Atitebi, Charity Onyekwere, kunle fawole, Yele Ogunti, Adekoya Adedoyin, Adenuga Adewale and Patience Nwachukwu. While the 40 wheelchairs were presented to the chairman of the physically challenged people in Kosofe federal constituency Mr. Tajudeen Abolore Ayetobi for onward distribution to his members.
The event was graced by eminent personalities such as the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Speaker of Federal House Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of state for Health, Sen. Olorunimbe Mamora; Lagos East Senatorial District senator, Mr. Tokunbo Abiru and senator Anthony Adefuye.
Addressing the mammoth gathering, the Lagos State Governor in his Keynote address, lauded Hon. Agunsoye for the laudable initiatives. Mr. Sanwo-Olu said, “I want to use this opportunity to thank Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye. It will be very difficult to dislike what he is doing; even if you don’t like him, this booklet speaks volume of what he has been able to do today as an Honourable member in Federal House of Representatives.
“I think he deserves all the encouragement. You can see all the multitude of crowd that are here today. So, Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye deserves all commendations and words of encouragement that were given to him.
“It doesn’t start today, I was with him when he celebrated his 50th and 55th birthdays and I remembered all the things he did. My prayer is that by next year when he is going to be sixty, he will do much more than he has done today.
While the speaker of Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila declared that Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye has performed excellently.
He said: “Rotimi Agunsoye has done very well; he has done well on the floor and off the floor. He is an accomplished legislator, a seasoned politician and democrat. I urge all the people of Kosofe to continue to rally round him.
“I was here for empowerment programme a couple of years ago. But he keeps getting better and better with each empowerment programme he does. What he has done today, I now have to go back to Surulere to better what he is doing today. ‘Rotimi ti le wa lere’ (Rotimi has put us on the run).
“What he has done can best be described as acts of great commitment, dedication, passion and love for his constituents.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank Rotimi for showing what representation should be. I want to thank the people of Kosofe for supporting my brother over the years. I urged them to keep supporting him".
”In his goodwill message, Senator Tokunbo Abiru representing Lagos East Senatorial District at the upper Legislative Chamber commended Hon. Agunsoye for choosing to celebrate birthday with his constituents, describing it as an act worthy of emulation.
He also thanked him for the support he gave him during the last Lagos East Senatorial Bye- election as well as acknowledging the various projects he facilitated to the constituency.
“Today is an opportunity for me to come back to Kosofe, to thank all the members of APC for the support they gave me during the last Lagos east senatorial bye- election. I want to say a big thank you.
“I want to also use this opportunity to warmly congratulate the celebrant and to also acknowledge the fact that celebrating in this manner with your constituents, rather than throwing a party, is the way to go. And that is what you are exhibiting and I salute you for that. It is a step that is worthy of emulation and trust me, I think our other colleagues in the National Assembly would love to work with this.
“Having said that, I also must acknowledge all the various things you have done for the constituents, starting from the ICT, the provision of Boreholes and all the other laudable things you have done, are very salutary. All I can say is that the only reward for good work is more work.
“And from the booklet you distributed, I can also see your contributions to national discuss in terms of bills and motions. These show the kind of quality representation that you are”, Senator Abiru said.
While Senator Anthony Adefuye, the Vice-Chairman of Lagos East Senatorial District said, “ROT you are doing very well. Other members are doing the same thing but I am proud of you. When I looked at the high table and I see most of you that are coming behind us, I am so proud that this are the people we are going to hand over to.”
Few days after that, on December 16, 2021 precisely, he again organised another Youth Empowerment Programme where five hundred participants received 50,000 naira each as take-off grant.
In his relentless efforts to make the residents of Kosofe Federal Constituency ICT proficient, the Lawmaker again engaged no fewer than 71 youth and women in ICT skill acquisition and empowerment. The two-day training empowerment programme was organized in conjunction with the National Human Rights Commission with beneficiaries empowered with Laptops and other gifts. It was the 5th in the series of ICT training and empowerment programmes the House Committee Chairman on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) had facilitated within two years to upskill and broaden the ICT knowledge of youth and women of the Constituency. So far thousands of youth and women in the area have benefited from the ICT training and Empowerment programme intervention of Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye.
The Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Barrister Moyosore Ogunlewe who graced the event that was held at the Galaxy event centre, Ojota, noted that Prince Agunsoye deserved to be highly commended for facilitating the ICT programme and empowering the youth and women of the constituency.
He posited that the ICT programme was not a mean feat taking cognizance of the huge amount of money involved in the procurement of the 71 brand new Laptops.
Barrister Ogunlewe stated further that the good gestures of the Lawmaker would definitely go a long away in transforming the lives of the beneficiaries positively.
Similarly, the Market leader of Mile 12 market, Mrs. Dupe Ojo also at the event declared that she was a typical example of Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye's benevolence and good leadership.
The mile 12 market leader made it known that the Honourable member House of Representatives has been excellent and diligent in providing selfless service to the people of his Constituency.
She said: "He has been doing all his best for the benefit of the citizenry. He has been using everything he has for the youth, the old and everybody within Kosofe Local government. And I standing here is a dividend of democracy from the MHR. As a market woman and a market leader, we the market women we loved him. Secondly, as the president of Kosofe Mothers Association, all the food is being bought by this young man.At Ojota they will say it, at Mile 12 they will say it. The ICT Centres, the classrooms, the many boreholes, and in everything he has been touching lives".
She submitted that Prince Rotimi Agunsoye is the best Member House of Representatives Kosofe Federal Constituency has ever had.
And less than a week after presenting 71 Laptops to youth and women after engaging them in intensive ICT skills acquisition programme, Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, once again, empowered another set of 400 constituents with N100,000 thousand each to aid and enhance their trades and productivities. While presenting cheques of 100,000 naira to each of the beneficiaries before a mammoth gathering, the distinguished Lawmaker urged them to effectively utilize the good gesture by working diligently to enhance their inventiveness and productivity to become relevant in society.
He said: “To the privileged beneficiaries, I implore you all to commit to your growth. I promise you, that if you stay true and put in the work, you will be better at it. You will record success and feel a sense of pride in yourself.
“Please be guided by the words of Oscar Aullq-ice on the power and relevance of social entrepreneurship and my decision to be a socio-entrepreneur rather than a bourgeoise. ‘Every individual and organization have a role to play in mobilizing skills, talents, and life experiences to move towards a more just and equitable world where all have what they need to survive and thrive in life.
“Remember, for every privilege you have enjoyed, it becomes your responsibility to pay it forward so that others may enjoy such privilege. How will you pay it forward, you may ask? The only way is to do better, to work smarter, to commit more, to say to yourself every day, I have got to be a positive story for those coming behind me. Only then, will you have shown appreciation to God for bringing this opportunity your way and conveying your thanks to those who have committed resources to ensure that you have a fighting chance at making something of yourselves”.
The Lawmaker expressed gratitude to God for being able to serve the people of the constituency, noting that the naira empowerment programme was one of the series of impactful projects he had facilitated since becoming their representative at the green chamber.
He equally made it known that the cash empowerment programme is a continuous exercise and followed other forms of empowerment programmes which he had executed within a week to impact people’s lives, namely: Impartial cash donation to widows across the length and breadth of the constituency, ICT Training and Distribution of Laptops to Participants across the three Local Governments Areas of the Constituency and Cash donations to several others Constituents across the board.
While hinting that his empowerment programmes would culminate in a groundbreaking empowerment programme he tagged as “Bugatti”, he assured of his unrelenting commitment and determination to bring more dividends of democracy to the constituency that would impact and change their lives.
“As your Representative, my commitment and determination to keep my promises of continuous, viable and sustainable empowerment initiatives account for the impactful stories of changed lives and the many other successes we have recorded for not just our constituency but for our party.
“It is my resolve to push not only further but farther into the deep recesses of our collective selves to engage for productivity, enhance capacities and empower for growth and development.
“As we walk the frontiers of this new age of the capacity building; I desire that constituent will begin to become aware of how competence can begin to change the narrative about our quality of life and lead us on to design solutions to our topical issues.
“As we seek to effect capacity building; our strategy is three-pronged. To deliver quality skill acquisition training, empower the participants to initiate a business life cycle for themselves and provide a support network system not just among each other as colleagues but with other established professionals. This strategy is designed to enable beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunities that abound and also be in a place to empower other people in the constituency”: he said.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu commended the Lawmaker for complementing the efforts of the state government in the area of economic development through a series of impactful empowerment programmes and training he has been organizing for the people of Kosofe Federal constituency since the beginning of his tenure as a federal legislator.
The Governor who was represented at the event by his Senior Special Assistant on Women Affairs and Employment, Mrs. Funke Adegoke, stated that Prince Agunsoye deserved to be commended for not only ensuring that youth and women in Kosofe Federal Constituency are permanently equipped with vocational skills and knowledge to take control of their future but for also empowering them financially to start. He noted that this has always been the trademark of Hon. Agunsoye since he assumed office as a legislator representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, effectively training hundreds of women and youth of the area to be self-sufficient, adding that it was an exemplary act that should be well applauded.
Sanwo-Olu said, “Today I especially appreciate Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye for the initiative you have taken to organize this training – an empowerment programme and poverty alleviation - and empower women and youth to be financially and economically independent.
“You will all agree with me that this is an exemplary act that is worth appreciating and applauded.
“You are not only representing Lagos state well but you are also complementing government’s efforts in the area of economic development and empowerment.
“This empowerment programme which has been the watchword since the inception of your tenure as a federal legislator has successfully trained and empowered hundreds of women and youth to self-sustenance, taking them away from the famines of the modern world. I think it deserves a round of applause”.
And finally came the mother of all empowerment programme Kosofe Federal Constituency had ever witnessed: “The Buggatti.” The Chairman House Committee on Sustainable Development Goals doled out 50 mini buses, 25 tricycles, 100 HP Desktop Computers, 100 UPS Power regulator, 85 Haier Thermocool Deep Freezers, 50 Sewing Machines, 100 Grinding Machines, 100 Hair Dryers, 10 Poultry pens and 10 Aquaculture Basin at an empowerment programme held at Funplex event centre Shangisha on December 14 2021 amidst great excitement and jubilation.

HEALTH CARE INTERVENTION
As part of his health care intervention effort, the Lawmaker donated a well-equipped Ambulance to Ameso Specialist Hospital and maintained a workable retainership with the hospital in emergency situation. And he has on several occasions come to the rescue of indigent patients in critical conditions by footing their medical bills.
And to boost the delivery of quality health care in Kosofe federal constituency, Hon. Agunsoye facilitated the construction of 80-Bed ultra-modern Primary Health Care Centre at Ojota Nursery/Primary School, Ojota. The health facility was commissioned and handed over to the State Government on 21st of April, 2023.
SECURITY
Through the National Human Rights Commission of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Rep Agunsoye facilitated the construction of the Isheri-North Police Post to increase the presence of federal law enforcement agents in that axis of Kosofe Federal Constituency and also donated five brand new motorcycles to Residents Associations in November 2020.
The Rotimi Agunsoye's example is vivifying, edifying and instructive. It has demonstrated and proved beyond any reasonable doubt that Lawmakers too are capable of bringing the dividends of democracy in manifold ways right to the hovels of their underprivileged Constituents if they are serious about it.
The situation whereby a lawmaker would spend a howling 8 years at the green chamber only to retire to the verdant opulence of his living room without uplifting the standard of living of his people a bit when he had the opportunity is egregious, selfish and irresponsible.
