Sanni Okanlawon football Competition kicks off In Kosofe Constituency 1
*Lawmaker To Splash N1m Total Prize Money On Winners
* Unveils Giant Trophy, Other Awards
The maiden edition of Okla Unity Cup will kick off today in two football-playing centres in Kosofe Constituency 1. The competition is sponsored by Hon Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, the member representing Kosofe Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
At a press briefing held on Sunday at Elomaz Hotel Maryland where the draw for the competition was made and the giant trophy and other awards were unveiled, 16 teams drawn from seven wards in the Constituency would take part in the competition.
The participating teams are Mende FC, Anthony All-Stars, Killer FC, Honour FC, Dynamic FC, Star Base FC, Amsterdam FC and Maryland United.
Others are Clique Sports Academy, Sharp Shooters, Sporting Royal, Crown F. A, Success FC, Legend F. A, Kaakaki FC and Ogudu Mopols.
According to the organizers of the competition, matches for the preliminary rounds will be played simultaneously on a Knockout basis at Beko Ransom Kuti Youth Centre, Adebayo Mokuolu Street Anthony and Araromi Youth Development Centre, Gbagada. While the final will be played at the Araromi Youth Development Centre Roundabout, Gbagada Lagos next week Sunday.
The winner of the football competition according to the Sponsor, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, would go home with prize money of N500,000 and a giant trophy, while the 2nd and 3rd runner ups will go home with N300,000 and N200,000 respectively.
Speaking at the press briefing, the sponsor of the competition, Hon Sanni Okanlawon, stated that the objectives of the competition were to enable burgeoning football talents to showcase their football skills, wean them away from social vices, create communal bonding among the youths and develop the winning mentality of the youth towards achieving success through sheer hard work and perseverance.
The House committee chairman on education popularly known as Okla by his political admirers noted that the competition would go a long way in arresting the social vices associated with youth restiveness such as rape, kidnapping, banditry, ritual killing and gangsterism, stressing that an idle mind is a devil's workshop.
He posited that if more sporting competitions like this are organised in society, the issue of social vices would be a thing of the past.
He, therefore, appealed to well-meaning people and philanthropists to take up the gauntlets to arrest the ugly trend in society by sponsoring sporting competitions.
He said: " Activities such as sport should be addressed among the youth. It helps solve youth restiveness because an idle mind is a devil's workshop.
" There are lots of vices going on in the society such as raping, kidnapping, ritual killing, banditry and gangsterism. With activities like this, we can arrest such untoward tendencies.
" If everybody and well-meaning people in the society can come up with an idea like this, the issue of gangsterism, kidnapping, banditry etc will be solved in the society.
" I appeal to well-meaning people who are public-spirited to come up and organize more of these sporting activities. Together we will address the issue of social vices".
While assuring the participating teams that the prize money would be increased at the next competition, he urged the players to display their football artistries and make the competition hitch-free.
The press briefing was graced by former Super Eagles players, Wasiu Ipaye and Godwin Okpara; the Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) Kosofe LGA, Alhaji Kehinde Bello; APC chieftain, Alhaji Musiliu Aigoro; Kosofe Leader of the House, Mr Idowu Oluloro; Former Secretary to Kosofe Local Government, Mr Abayomi Ologbonori and Otunba Tunde Balogun.
Ex- International Wasiu Ipaye while praising the sponsor of the competition, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, urged the players to be of good behaviour and show great discipline.
Former Strasbourg of France player, Godwin Okpara, implored the players to seize the opportunity and showcase their talents to sell themselves to scouts who would be on the ground at the competition.
While Kosofe LGA APC Chairman, Alhaji Kehinde Bello, urged the participating teams to play according to the rules of the game while he at the same time appreciated the immense contribution of Hon. Okanlawon to the development of sports, most especially table tennis and football, in Kosofe Constituency 1.
Other prizes to be won at the one-week football competition are the Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, Best Coach and Fair Play Team.
