Rep Rotimi Agunsoye Makes Case For Low Energy Consuming Appliances, As House Of Reps Adopts Motion
The Federal House of Representatives, yesterday, unanimously adopted the motion on "call to encourage the importation and use of Low Energy Consuming Appliances moved by the member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, Hon. Prince Rotimi Agunsoye at plenary.
The House after reaching a resolution on the motion called for a sustainable policy geared towards phasing out non-energy efficient appliances or equipment for domestic, commercial and industrial usage in the country.
Leading the debate, Hon. Agunsoye, made it known that energy-efficient appliances help forestall greenhouse emissions and protect the environment as most households use these appliances such as televisions, refrigerators bulbs, air
conditioners, among others.
According to him, countries all over the world are making use of energy-efficient appliances, which he said is critical to economic development as well as environmental sustainability.
Agunsoye, therefore, expressed concern that most Nigerian households are still in the habit of using incandescent bulbs and other appliances with high voltage, which are detrimental to the nation’s power supply chain.
The lawmaker explained
that the use of energy-efficient appliances and equipment will minimize the exploitation of natural resources
such as natural gas, coal, water, diesel, petrol, and equally enhance the conservation of these resources towards achieving sustainable development.
He added that as other countries have stopped the use of high consuming appliances and equipment, Nigeria has, however,
become a dumping ground for such items which comes at a considerably cheap price.
He, therefore, called for urgent measures to address this development as non-energy efficient products will impact negatively on the economic stability of the country.
Adopting the motion the house while urging the ministry of power and Standards Organization of Nigeria to come up with a viable policy to phase out non-energy efficient appliances and equipment mandated its committees on power and industry to ensure compliance.
