FACT CHECK: KOSOFE LG CHAIRMAN DID NOT PAY LESS SALARIES TO HIS EXECUTIVES

Last week Thursday, a Facebook page, Kosofe Headline, posted a write-up titled: "Kosofe Local Government Chairman and His Rubber stamp excos/Cabinet" where it alleged among other things, that the executive chairman of Kosofe local government Barrister Moyosore Ogunlewe had been paying his executives salaries below the amount stipulated by the Lagos State Government.

According to the Facebook page, the council Chairman had been paying a monthly salary of N300,000 instead of N328,666:82 stipulated by the Lagos State Government.

Then on Saturday, to substantiate its claim, it published a document showing the approved salary scales for public office holders in each local government in Lagos state.
In the document dated 4th May, 2022 addressed to all the council Chairmen, titled: "Re Welfare Package For Political Office Holders Across The LGAs/LCDAs In Lagos State and signed by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Kosofe Local Government is placed in category B where monthly gross emolument payable to each executive of the council is pegged at N328, 666:00.

FACT CHECK: BARRISTER MOYOSORE OGUNLEWE DID NOT SHORT-PAY EXECUTIVE MEMBERS.

Following the release of the document, Kosofe Reporters went into an investigative mode to unravel the truth and discovered that the allegation levelled against the council Boss was false and a deliberate distortion of fact.
In the course of our investigation, we came across another document attached to the same document posted by Kosofe Headline where the amount of tax-deductible from the gross salary of each executive is stipulated by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

According to the document, a tax of N28,666:82 is deductible from the gross salary of N328,666:82 while the Net Salary Payable is N300,000.

We equally discovered that the actual deductable amount of tax stipulated by the Federal Government is N48,666:82 as against N28,666:82 stipulated by the Lagos State Government.

The N28,666:00 is the Lagos State Government's arrangement to reduce the total amount of tax payable.
