Somolu APC Primaries Shake-Up: Olowo, "Dullar" Step Down for Kolade Alabi
The race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives ticket in Somolu Federal Constituency took a dramatic turn on Friday as two frontline aspirants withdrew and threw their support behind former ALGON National Chairman, Hon. Kolade Alabi.
Former Lagos State House of Assembly member Rotimi Olowo Emmanuel and former Somolu LGA Chairman Hon. Salawu Dullar formally stepped down from the contest, endorsing Alabi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move collapses what was shaping up as a three-way battle between Olowo, Salawu, and Alabi into a single, consolidated front. Party insiders say the decision followed high-level consultations among stakeholders and leaders in Somolu and Bariga aimed at strengthening cohesion and avoiding a divisive primary.
With the endorsement, Alabi now enters the APC primary with a significantly expanded base. The former Bariga LCDA chairman was already considered a frontrunner due to his grassroots mobilization record and his stint as ALGON National Chairman.
Olowo’s withdrawal is particularly significant. The former lawmaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is one of Somolu’s most recognizable political figures. His exit signals either a strategic decision to prioritize party unity or a negotiated arrangement involving future roles and influence within the constituency.
Salawu, who previously chaired Somolu LGA, brings ward-level structure and grassroots machinery. His support is expected to strengthen Alabi’s reach across the constituency’s communities.
If the endorsement holds, it would mark a clear push by APC leaders in Somolu and Lagos East to settle on a consensus candidate early. Step-downs of this nature are often used to prevent acrimony and ensure the party goes into the general election united.
Political observers note that the development could set a template for how Lagos APC handles other crowded primaries across the state, especially in constituencies with multiple heavyweight aspirants.
