LASTMA SPECIAL TRAFFIC MAYOR COMMENCES SENSITISATION EXERCISE TO EASE TRAFFIC JAMS ON LAGOS ROADS.

Charge Commuters to obey traffic rules

Calls for more volunteers

In its bid to rid Lagos state of perennial traffic gridlocks, a traffic control volunteer group known as LASTMA Special Traffic Mayor has commenced regular traffic control exercise to combat the menace and thereby ease traffic jams on Lagos roads.

The traffic volunteer group which comprises respectable men and women from all walks of life rendering free humanitarian services, yesterday, converged at Iju road /Fagba axis of Ifako Ijaye Local Government Area - an axis well known for terrible traffic jams - to assist the personnel of LASTMA and Nigeria Police in easing traffic gridlock in the area.

As early as 7 in the morning, the traffic Mayors had arrived at the junction of Iju road and Fagba street and could be seen directing traffic and advising motorists to stick to the right lanes.

After a while, they were able to bring orderliness to the traffic situation in the area, ensuring the free flow of vehicular movement.

Speaking with newsmen during the exercise, the State Chairman of LASTMA Special Mayors, Abayomi Bickersteth, disclosed that the exercise was basically designed to sensitize motorists in the area on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations, and also to complement the efforts of LASTMA officials.

He noted that he and his team decided to storm Iju road Fagba axis of Ifako Ijaye Local Government Area to lend a hand to traffick officials who were always overwhelmed by the terrible traffic situation associated with the axis.

He further disclosed that Special Traffic Mayors in the area would be operating regularly, Tuesdays and Thursdays, just like in other Local Government Areas, to ease snarl-up.

Mr. Bickersteth, however, implored commuters to always adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to ensure free-flow of vehicular movement while he at the same time made a passionate plea for more people to join the traffic control volunteer group.

In the same vein the welfare officer of LASTMA Special Mayor, Dr. Bose Olubo Adegeye, enjoined Motorists to always adhere to traffic rules and regulations for the free-flow of vehicular movement while she appealed to people with unquestionable characters to also team up with the group to curb the traffic menace.

While Ajah coordinator of LASTMA Special Traffic Mayor, Mr. Omo Oti urged Motorists to always cooperate with Traffic Mayors to ensure free flow of vehicular movement on Lagos roads.

He explained that Special Traffic Mayors unlike LASTMA officials are very mobile and could control traffic anywhere it is encountered.

He noted that the sensitisation exercise was also designed to prove to motorists that LASTMA Special Traffic Mayors have the backing of the Lagos State Government to control traffic in the state.

While Chief Pradeep Kumar Sham, an Indian-born Nigerian who has been residing in the country for the past 41 years, advised motorists to always respect the Special Traffic Mayors and obey traffic rules and regulations to make roads useful for everyone.

Chief Sham who is LASTMA Special Traffic Mayors coordinator at Ikoyi said he has been a traffic Mayor for about 10 years and he is very proud of rendering the volunteer services as well as being very proud to be a Nigerian.
