Owokoniran Campaign Team Dismisses Smear Campaign, Clarifies Family Ties
The campaign organisation of Babatunde Shuaib Owokoniran (BSO), aspirant for Kosofe Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has dismissed what it described as a “malicious smear campaign” by political opponents over his family background.
In a press statement signed by the BSO Campaign Media and made available to Kosofe Reporters on Saturday, the group accused detractors of resorting to “personal, childish attacks” by questioning the parentage of the aspirant in a bid to distract from their lack of vision.
“It has come to our attention that political opponents, in a desperate attempt to distract from their lack of a vision, have resorted to spreading malicious falsehoods regarding our symbol parentage,” the statement read.
The campaign clarified that while former Lagos lawmaker and ex-commissioner, Rahman Owokoniran, is not the biological father of Babatunde Shuaib Owokoniran, he remains “one of the father figures who shaped Babatunde Shuaib Owokoniran into the leader we know today.”
“Prince Wasiu A.K Owokoniran is, and always has been, the father of Babatunde Shuaib Owokoniran. He is the man who raised him, taught him the values of integrity and hard work, and stood by him throughout his life before his demise,” the statement added.
Describing the claims as “a new low,” the BSO Campaign Media said the attacks were designed to create doubt and sow discord, stressing that “blood is not defined by biology; blood is defined by sacrifice, mentorship, and action.”
The statement urged the public to disregard the “deliberate attempt to smear BSO’s pedigree” and focus on issues rather than “baseless slander.”
“We will not be distracted by the petty, desperate gossip of those who cannot compete with Babatunde Shuaib Owokoniran’s genealogy and track record,” it stated, adding that political propaganda “is the deliberate, systematic manipulation of information… to influence public opinion.”
The campaign implored residents of Kosofe Constituency 1 to ignore the propaganda and assess the aspirant on his record and capacity to represent them.
