Bariga APC Grassroots Reject Ali Balogun, Demand Restoration of Apata’s Mandate

Leaders, youth executives, and grassroots mobilizers in Somolu Constituency II, Bariga LCDA, have rejected the imposition of Ali Balogun as the All Progressives Congress, APC, flagbearer for the constituency, warning it could cost the party victory in the general election.

In a protest letter dated June 1, 2026 and addressed to the APC National Working Committee, Lagos State Executive Committee, and apex leaders of Somolu Constituency II, the stakeholders described the move as “undemocratic” and a “direct invitation to electoral disaster.”

The group accused Balogun of being a “political stranger” with no history of contributing to or building the party structure in Bariga LCDA. They contrasted him with incumbent assembly member Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata, whom they called a “deeply rooted grassroots leader” who has consistently stood by the party and the people.

Citing figures from the party primaries, the stakeholders said Apata secured over 9,000 votes from loyal members of the constituency, while Balogun polled about 600 votes. “To attempt to replace a candidate with such massive popular backing with someone who managed a meager 600 votes is an insult to our collective intelligence and a mockery of democratic primaries,” the letter stated.

They further argued that replacing a performing, loyal first-time assembly member who has brought representation closer to the grassroots is “unfair and counterproductive.”

“We will not vote for him”
The group issued a final resolution warning the party leadership that the grassroots will not be bullied. They said they labored to sustain APC’s supremacy in Bariga and will not allow outsiders to benefit from it.

“If this injustice is not immediately corrected, and if Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata’s hard-earned mandate is not restored, we will NOT vote for Ali Balogun in the general election. We will not mobilize, we will not campaign, and we will not cast our votes for a political stranger,” the statement read.

The stakeholders urged the leadership to choose between respecting the “9,000+ voices of the grassroots” or risking defeat in Bariga to the opposition. They demanded immediate intervention and the restoration of Apata’s candidacy.

The letter was signed by “All Bariga Youths and Grassrooters” on behalf of aggrieved stakeholders, youth captains, and party faithful in Somolu Constituency II.

SOMOLU CONSTITUENCY IISOMOLU CONSTITUENCY IILETTER OF PROTEST AND TOTAL REJECTION OF IMPOSED CANDIDACY IN SOMOLU CONSTITUENCY II
Date: June 1, 2026
To:
The Leadership / National Working Committee / State Executive Committee,
[ All Progressives Congress, APC]
Lagos State Chapter.Through
The Apex Leaders & Stakeholders,
Somolu Constituency II / Bariga LCDA.
Dear Sirs/Ma,

SUBJECT: VEHEMENT REJECTION OF THE IMPOSITION OF AN OUTSIDER (ALI BALOGUN) AND UNAVOIDABLE CONSEQUENCES FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION

We, the undersigned leaders, stakeholders, youth executives, and grassroots mobilizers representing the core political fabric of Somolu Constituency II (Bariga LCDA), write this letter with a heavy heart but an unyielding resolve. We are writing to formally register our total, unconditional rejection of the attempt to impose Ali Balogun as the flagbearer for Somolu Constituency II.
Politics is about the people, numbers, loyalty, and active participation. The current attempt to subvert the will of the grassroots is not only undemocratic but is a direct invitation to electoral disaster. We reject this imposition based on the following undeniable facts:

A Political Stranger vs. A Proven Grassroots Champion: Ali Balogun is a complete outsider to the local politics of Bariga LCDA.
He has never for once contributed to, joined, or built the political structure of Bariga. In stark contrast,Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata is a deeply rooted grassroots leader, an incumbent first-timer assembly member who has consistently stood by the party and the people.

The Mandate of Numbers: The voice of the people was loud and clear. Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata secured an overwhelming mandate of over 9,000 votes from the loyal members of this constituency. To attempt to replace a candidate with such massive popular backing with someone who managed a meager about 600 votes is an insult to our collective intelligence and a mockery of democratic primaries.

Rewarding Betrayal over Loyalty: Replacing a performing, loyal, and widely accepted first-time assembly member who has brought representation closer to the grassroots is unfair and counterproductive.

OUR STAND AND FINAL RESOLUTION
Let it be known to the state leadership and the apex bodies that the grassroots will not be bullied. We have labored to build and sustain the supremacy of the party in Bariga, and we refuse to watch outsiders reap where they did not sow.

If this injustice is not immediately corrected, and if Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata’s hard-earned mandate is not restored, we will NOT vote for Ali Balogun in the general election.

We will not mobilize, we will not campaign, and we will not cast our votes for a political stranger. The leadership must choose between respecting the 9,000+ voices of the grassroots or losing Bariga in the general election to the opposition.
We demand immediate intervention. Give us the man we voted for. Restore Hon. Samuel Oluwafemi Apata

Yours Faithfully,
