The TA'AWUN Humanitarian Forum, Lagos State, on October 1st, held its Independence Day empowerment programme and medical outreach at NIA Nursery and Primary School, Ojota.
The event, themed *"Nigeria @ 66: Empowering Youth, Securing The Future Through Humanitarian Action,"* was organized by the Forum, a humanitarian organization committed to improving lives through empowerment, healthcare, free educational activities, security services and cooperative services for community development.
As part of the programme, the organization conducted a free medical outreach for over 200 persons and empowered residents with items including popcorn machines, sewing machines and grinding machines.
In his welcome address, the President of the organisation, Mr. Taiwo Lasisi, stated the purpose of staging the programme and highlighted the humanitarian activities of the forum.
He explained that the Independence Day programme was conceived to commemorate Nigeria @ 66 by empowering youth and securing the future through humanitarian action, while also providing healthcare support to vulnerable members of the community.
According to him, TA'AWUN Humanitarian Forum remains committed to community development through youth empowerment initiatives, free medical outreach, free educational activities, security support services and cooperative services aimed at improving the lives of residents.
Guest speakers at the event included Alhaji Rasheed Awofeso, CEO of the Child Protection Network, SUPOL Raji Umoru who represented the Area H Commander, ACP Fola Oyinlade, and Rev. Mathew Adejumo, the CAN Chairman, Kosofe Local Government Area.
The event was also graced by Hon. Olumide County, the former Leader of the House, Kosofe Local Government.
The event also had in attendance community leaders, religious leaders, youth leaders, women leaders, members of the TA'AWUN Humanitarian Forum, beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, and residents of Ojota and its environs who turned out in large numbers to witness the Independence Day celebration.
The presence of the diverse stakeholders, according to the organisers, underscored the Forum's grassroots acceptance and its growing role in fostering unity, security awareness and development in Kosofe Local Government Area.
Speaking on the theme: "Nigeria @ 66: Empowering Youth, Securing The Future Through Humanitarian Action," Alhaji Rasheed Awofeso, the CEO of Child Protection Network, commended the Forum for its work in empowering youth, helping the aged and assisting communities. He said organisations like TA'AWUN deserve support, noting that substance abuse among children and youth in society today is alarming and requires urgent attention.
Awofeso defined youth as persons between the ages of 18 to 35, describing them as the active population and spark of society, while anyone under 18 remains a child who cannot give consent or sign a contract under the law.
He stressed that true empowerment goes beyond token handouts, calling for networking, information and sustainable resources that can take youth to any environment, rather than one-off palliatives that do not last beyond a day.
On his part, SUPOL Raji Umoru, representing the Area H Commander, ACP Fola Oyinlade, said the police was partnering with community-based organisations to educate residents on the role of youth as partners in progress in community policing. He said community policing remains a safer strategy to sustain security in local government areas in Lagos State, with focus on the welfare of elders and children.
In his remarks, the CAN Chairman, Kosofe LGA, Rev. Mathew Adejumo, commended the Forum for sustaining the humanitarian programme for several years.
According to him, "That this program has been on for several years. So I have a lot of schedule today, I have to leave one program and come down here because I promise him. I want to thank God for your life..."
Rev. Adejumo praised the President of the Forum for his consistency and commitment to community development and urged the organization to keep up the good work.
Also speaking, Hon. Olumide County, former Leader of the House, Kosofe Local Government, in his goodwill message, expressed delight at the humanitarian activities of the Forum and pledged to render necessary support to the organization to continue its empowerment and healthcare initiatives in the community.
