The pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron has won a second term as French president, becoming the first leader to win re-election in France for 20 years, after a bruising campaign in which he beat the far right’s Marine Le Pen by a decisive 58.2% to 41.8%, according to initial projected results. Macron, who is to address supporters in a victory rally at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, beat Le Pen with a lower margin than the 66% he won against her in 2017. Turnout was also lower than five years ago, with abstention estimated at 28%. Le Pen succeeded in delivering the far right its biggest-ever score in a French presidential election, after campaigning on the cost of living crisis, and promising a ban on the Muslim headscarf in public places as well as nationalist measures to give priority to native-French people over others for jobs, housing, benefits and healthcare. The 18 wives of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, may now be available to suitors without undergoing cleansing rituals after the demise of the renowned monarch. Oba Adeyemi, 83, passed on late Friday after receiving treatments at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti and was buried according to Islamic rites on Saturday. Oba Adeyemi’s queens, Abibat (first wife), Rahmat Adedayo, Mujidat, Rukayat, Folashade, Badirat Ajoke, Memunat Omowunmi, Omobolanle, Moji, Anuoluwapo, Damilola, Chioma and others are now available for suitors. According to a palace Chief, “they are not performing any cleansing; They are free to move on with their lives,” he said. Nonetheless, he said. “The wives cannot get married to an indigene of Oyo.” He added, “Now that Alaafin is dead, they all would be asked to exit the palace with their belongings. Although the properties of the late monarch would be shared among them.”

The remains of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, will be buried at 4pm today (Saturday) according to Islamic rites, Palace has announced.   The Head of Oyo Mesi, who is the Prime Minister of Oyo Kingdom, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, said this while addressing journalists at the palace. The Oyo prime minister said, “We have called the Imam. Baba will be buried today around 4pm.” He confirmed that Oba Adeyemi died at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti on Friday night. Ayoola added that all the traditional rites have been performed on the body of the late monarch.

As the 2023 general election date draws near, Commissioners, Special Advisers, and other political appointees in Lagos State seeking elective offices next year have been mandated by the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to resign from their respective positions. Also directed by the governor to tender their resignation letter before the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) were appointees seeking to be among delegates for political parties’ primaries for elective offices in 2023. Sanwo-Olu’s directives was contained in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola. According to the circular, all appointees and civil servants eyeing elective offices and aiming to participate in party primaries as well as other political activities should resign before April 19th, 2022.
